Excessive Sweating Treatment

Excessive underarm sweating

If you suffer from excessive sweating or hyperhidrosis as it is medically known, you can have it successfully treated by injection of a specific protein into the sweat glands to temporarily block its function.  This has been used as a standard treatment for the condition for many years. According to the International Hyperhidrosis Society, 5% of the World’s population (365 Million people) suffer from this condition so you are not alone.

The commonest area for excessive sweating is the underarm area although some individuals experience excessive sweating in the palms of hands, the soles of feet and the face. The cause is often unknown.

If you suffer from this condition, please make an appointment for a consultation to discuss your concerns, assess suitability and consider treatment options.

Frequently Asked Questions

What products are used and how does it work?
The product we use is Botulinum toxin, which is a protein, derived from a bacterium called Clostridium botulinum. When this protein is injected into the sweat glands, it blocks the signal from the nerve to the gland. This will stop the gland producing sweat. Over a period this effect will wear off resulting in symptoms returning.
What to expect in this type of consultation?
This has to be a face-to-face consultation with the doctor who will be prescribing the medication. They will go through your medical history, medications you take, any allergies you may have and any previous treatments you have had. They will go through the procedure of the treatment and the benefits and risks as well.
How painful is the treatment?
The needles we use are very small and the discomfort is minimal. You may prefer to have a local anaesthetic cream applied to the area prior to the treatment.
How is the treatment done?
You would be asked to shave the area and avoid antiperspirants for 24 hours prior to the treatment. On the day of treatment, after cleaning the area, a solution of iodine and starch will be applied to isolate the sweat glands and then the injections will be given systematically to treat all the sweat glands.
What are the immediate effects of the injection?
Straight after the injection, you will notice slight bumps at the injection sites but these settle within half an hour. It is recommended you refrain from lying down for 4 hours after the procedure to avoid the product moving out of the muscle. Some people develop a headache, facial pain, itching and tenderness at injection sites, rash, fatigue and flu-like illness after the treatment. There is a risk related to having a needle piercing the skin which includes infection and bleeding but these are minimised by carrying out the treatment in a clean environment and cleaning the skin prior to the procedure. It is very rare to have an anaphylactic reaction to botulinum toxin but we always have an EpiPen available in the very unlikely event of an emergency.
Are there any circumstances when the emergency services should be contacted?
If you experience any of the following please contact the doctor immediately or call 999.

  • If you develop difficulty swallowing, speech or breathing difficulty.
  • If you develop a severe allergic reaction.
Are there any restrictions on my activities after the treatment?
Depending on how easily you bruise you might get some bruising which settles after a few days. You have to avoid alcohol and excessive exercise for at least 24 hours after the treatment as this will increase blood flow to the area and dilute the medication making the treatment less effective. You must also avoid antiperspirant use for 24 hrs. after the procedure to avoid the risk of infection. Your aftercare will be discussed in more detail at the face-to-face consultation.
How soon after treatment do the effects show?
The effects are never visible immediately. It takes about 4-5days to start experiencing some effects but usually the treatment will become fully effective 2-4 weeks after the procedure when most practitioners advise a face-to-face review.
Are there any possible complications associated with this treatment?
Any complications are likely to be due to the placement of the product in the wrong area but this is avoided by isolating the glands with the iodine test before treatment. You will always have Dr Tash’s personal number to contact at any time for your reassurance.
Can men and women have the same treatment?
Yes, the injections are exactly the same.
Are there any circumstances when you can’t have this treatment?
The drug is licenced for ages 18 to 65. You cannot have it if you are pregnant or breastfeeding or if you suffer from some neuromuscular disorders. That is why medical history is very important.
How long do the effects last after one treatment?
The results of your treatment can last for up to 6-9 months depending on your individual metabolism, lifestyle, smoking and sun exposure.
How safe is this treatment?
Botulinum toxin has been safely used to treat medical conditions for many years. The results vary between individuals and repeated treatments are necessary to maintain the effects.
